Recognition
- LiVEDDDHead: Lightheadedness, Visual disturbance, Euphoria, Disorientation, Drowsiness, Dizziness, Headache → symptoms common to lack of O2
- CO is odorless, but usually associated with the smell of exhaust fumes, and possibly muscle weakness
Avoidance and recovery
- Pre-flight: check condition of exhaust system and heater shroud
- Remove source (turn off cabin heat)
- Ventilate cabin (open vents and windows)
- Use supplemental O2
- Land—CO poisoning reverses slowly and may result in prolonged impairment
