Recognition

  • LiVEDDDHead: Lightheadedness, Visual disturbance, Euphoria, Disorientation, Drowsiness, Dizziness, Headache → symptoms common to lack of O2
  • CO is odorless, but usually associated with the smell of exhaust fumes, and possibly muscle weakness

Avoidance and recovery

  • Pre-flight: check condition of exhaust system and heater shroud
  • Remove source (turn off cabin heat)
  • Ventilate cabin (open vents and windows)
  • Use supplemental O2
  • Land—CO poisoning reverses slowly and may result in prolonged impairment
